Global Political Battles and Defense Market Opportunities
Gurmeet Chadha, the CEO of Full Cycle Advisors, said that ongoing battles around the world, like the Russia-Ukraine situation and rising tensions in the Middle East, are driving up the need for defence equipment. He says that world defence stocks are at their lowest ever due to long-running wars and more military help being sent to those areas. This situation gives countries like India the chance to become important players in making and supplying defence products.
Exploiting Opposition to Globalization for Defense Manufacturing
Ex-RBI Chief Raghuram Rajan, in a discussion with ET, brought attention to how the opposing views on globalization by the Donald Trump administration might actually benefit India, especially in the field of defense manufacturing. With global defense budgets on the rise due to growing security concerns, Rajan stressed the significance of seizing these chances to enhance India’s role in international trade and defense collaborations.

The discussion also highlighted India’s flourishing defense sector. During 2023-24, India saw a significant surge in defense manufacturing, hitting a peak of Rs 1. India’s trade turnover reached a whopping 27 trillion rupees, with exports surpassing 21 billion rupees for the very first time. These exports stretched across more than 90 nations, illustrating India’s expanding significance as a center for defense production and exports. The Department of Defense has laid out a challenging goal to raise exports to Rs 50,000 crore in the coming five years.
The “Make in India” Initiative
India remains one of the world’s biggest weapons consumers, however, even with these successes. Still, the ten-year-old “Make in India” initiative seeks to reduce dependence on imported goods by promoting domestic manufacturing and exports. This is part of India’s broader vision of developing self-reliance in critical sectors such as defense.
