Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was criticized after a controversial incident at a Congress rally in Belagavi on April 28, 2025. The rally, as part of the ‘Samvidhan Bachao & Anti-Price Rise Rally,’ was interrupted by BJP workers who were identified as women who approached the stage, waving black flags and raising slogans against the state government.

The unexpected breach led to a moment of visible frustration from Siddaramaiah, who summoned Additional Superintendent of Police Narayan Bharamani to the stage. Siddaramaiah is shown in a video that has since gone viral lifting his hand toward the officer in an action many understood as an effort to slap, though he stopped short of making contact. There has been much criticism directed at the activities of the Chief Minister. Labeling the action as an “unforgivable crime” and a show of contempt for a government official, the Janata Dal (Secular) denounced it. The BJP also joined in, state head B Y Vijayendra characterizing Siddaramaiah’s behavior as “inexcusable” and suggestive of being “drunk on power.”

Police arrested the protesting women activists in reaction to the disturbance and guided them out of the event. But outside, tensions grew as Congress supporters mobbed the police cars transporting the inmates, causing more delays and a brief lathi charge to clear the throng. This episode fuels a slew of issues around Siddaramaiah.

In reaction to a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, he just came under criticism for remarks implying that “war is not necessary”. Later on, he said that war should be a “last resort,” but political rivals grabbed onto the comments as proof of inadequate leadership.

Recent actions by Siddaramaiah have started a bigger talk about how public officials should act and how people should complain about the police. As things heat up politically in Karnataka, the actions of the Chief Minister remain a key focus for both supporters and opponents.
