Meta Unveils Edits, New Video Editing App to Rival CapCut
Meta is developing a new video editing app, Edits, which it aims to be as good as the popular CapCut of ByteDance. This follows after CapCut got removed from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store recently. This move left many creators without alternatives.
Meta’s social media platform, Threads, will be launching next month for iOS, and an Android version will follow shortly. According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, Edits is designed to offer creators a suite of tools for producing high-quality videos directly on their phones. The app includes a high-quality camera, an inspiration tab, and a space to track ideas. With users able to share draft versions of their video with friends or collaborators, it makes working on projects easier.

Its most outstanding feature is that Edits is also integrated with Instagram. Users, after publishing videos on Instagram, gain access to insights for details about how their content performs on the platform and are suitable for creators looking to grow their audience and improve their content.
According to Mosseri, Edits is “more for creators than casual video makers,” which implies that the app is more set up for users who want to produce professional-quality content. Key features of this app make it a perfect complement for Instagram, allowing creators to easily produce, edit, and track the success of their videos on the Meta platform.
Meta’s strategy with Edits is part of its efforts to respond as promptly as possible to how the digital content creation landscape and digital technology have evolved. When TikTok was banned in India in 2020, Meta launched Instagram Reels shortly after. Similarly, in 2023, Meta introduced Threads as a competitor to text-based platforms like X (formerly Twitter). With Edits, Meta is positioning itself to capture creators who are looking for new editing tools.
Even if CapCut is returned, the vagueness regarding its future renders this the ideal moment for Meta to introduce Edits as an alternative. Creators who have banked on CapCut may go to Edits for its integrations with Instagram and advanced features in editing.
Edits moves into a very crowded market as social media companies like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts are competing with the video creators. However, Edits has the upper hand due to its complete integration with Instagram. This service allows creators to not only make videos but track how well those videos are doing on Instagram. That could be a significant draw for influencers seeking an easy way to link content creation to audience engagement.
Meta’s user base is extensive, and its agility in adapting to the changing marketplace makes Edits a promising new addition to Meta’s suite of creative tools. As the digital content creation landscape continues to evolve, the Edits app from Meta hopes to give creators all the best possible tools to bring their visions to life.
