Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu Reassures India on Security During State Visit
NewDelhi,October7,2024 – Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, during his first official state visit to India, has reassured that his country will not take any actions that undermine India’s security. The visit, aimed at mending strained ties between the two nations, comes amid concerns over the Maldives’ growing relationship with China.
President Muizzu was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan and is scheduled to hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu. The discussions are expected to focus on enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in the infrastructure sector.
In an exclusive interview with The Times of India, President Muizzu emphasized,” Maldives would never do anything that undermines the security of India. India is a valued partner and friend of the Maldives, and our relationship is built on mutual respect and shared interests.“
The visit marks a significant step towards resetting diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries. Muizzu’s visit also includes stops in Mumbai and Bengaluru to participate in business events.
The Maldives-India relationship had been strained due to the previous government’s decision to expel Indian military personnel and contentious remarks by Maldivian ministers. However, the current visit is seen as a positive move to strengthen ties and address mutual concerns.
