On April 14, 2025, pop icon Katy Perry embarked on a groundbreaking journey to space aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, joining an all-female crew in a mission that combined scientific advancement with a powerful statement on gender representation in space exploration.

A Milestone in Space Travel

The NS-31 mission was the first time solely women ventured into space since Soviet pilot Valentina Tereshkova’s solitary trip in 1963. The group consisted of:

  • Katy Perry – Global pop star and advocate for female empowerment
  • Lauren Sánchez – Pilot, journalist, and fiancée of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos
  • Gayle King: A famous CBS reporter.
  • Amanda Nguyen: A Nobel Peace Prize nominee and civil rights campaigner.
  • Asifa Bowe: Aerospace engineer who used to work as a scientist at NASA.
  • Kerianne Flynn: Film director who focuses on topics related to women.

The mission lasted about 10 minutes and 21 seconds and reached the Kármán line, which is the line that everyone agrees is the edge of space. During the short time they were weightless, Perry sang “What a Wonderful World,” which perfectly captured the wonder of seeing Earth from space. When she got off the plane, she kissed the ground to show how grateful she was for the experience.

Personal Motivations and Symbolism

Katy Perry took a flower into space to represent her daughter’s flower and her hope to inspire people in the future. “I hope my journey inspires my daughter and others to reach for the stars, literally and figuratively,” she said. Amanda Nguyen was the first Vietnamese American woman to go into space. She saw the trip as a way to heal families and make long-held goals come true.

Public Reaction and Environmental Concerns

Katy perry criticized

Some people praised the project as a big step forward for women’s equality in space, but others didn’t like it. Model Emily Ratajkowski called the project “disgusting,” asking how it would affect the environment and how it would make sense to promote space travel while hurting the Earth. Olivia Wilde, an actress, joined the criticism by posting a picture making fun of the launch. This brought up issues of resource allocation and environmental duty.

A Step Toward Inclusive Space Exploration

Even though people had different opinions, the NS-31 mission is an important part of space history because it shows that everyone can be involved in space exploration. To motivate the next generation of explorers, Lauren Sánchez stressed the value of stories and showing a range of people. As space tourism grows, missions like NS-31 show how science progress, personal motivation, and social values all come together. This makes people think about the future of space travel and how it will affect our world.
