In a significant development during the 2024 Indian general elections, a Gujarat BJP leader was arrested for allegedly live-streaming polling from a booth, raising concerns about the sanctity of the electoral process and the potential misuse of technology. This incident has sparked a nationwide debate on the need for stricter regulations and oversight to ensure the integrity of elections.

The Incident

On May 7, 2024, during the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections, Vijay Bhabhor, son of BJP MP Jasvantsinh Bhabhor, was caught on camera live-streaming the polling process from a booth in the Santrampur Assembly Segment of Dahod Parliamentary Constituency in Gujarat. The video, which went viral on social media, showed Bhabhor stating, “Machine apne baap nu che (The voting machine belongs to my father),” implying that his father, the sitting MP, had control over the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).

Bogus voting was also reported at the polling booth, further casting doubt on the fairness of the electoral process. Following the incident, Congress candidate Dr. Prabhaben Taviad filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Repolling and Arrest

In response to the incident, the ECI declared the poll held on May 7 to be void and announced repolling at the affected polling station. The repolling took place on May 11, 2024, at Parthampur Primary School between 7 am and 6 pm.

Vijay Bhabhor was arrested for his involvement in the incident. His actions not only violated the sanctity of the electoral process but also undermined the public’s trust in the democratic system. The arrest sent a strong message that such behavior would not be tolerated and that strict action would be taken against those who attempted to manipulate the electoral process.

Impact on Gujarat’s Political Scenario

The incident has had a significant impact on the political scenario in Gujarat. The state has traditionally been a stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with the party winning all the MP seats in the previous Lok Sabha elections. However, the incident has raised questions about the BJP’s commitment to fair and transparent elections and may influence voter sentiment in the upcoming elections.

The opposition parties, particularly the Indian National Congress (INC), have been quick to seize the opportunity to criticize the BJP and accuse it of undermining the democratic process. The incident may also lead to increased scrutiny of the BJP’s actions in other states, with opposition parties looking for similar instances of electoral malpractice.

The Role of Technology and Social Media

The incident has also highlighted the potential misuse of technology and social media in the electoral process. While technology has made it easier for people to participate in the democratic process, it has also opened up new avenues for manipulation and interference. The live-streaming of the polling process is a clear example of how technology can be used to undermine the electoral process.

Similarly, social media platforms have played a significant role in spreading the video of the incident, raising questions about their responsibility to prevent the dissemination of misleading or false information. The incident underscores the need for stricter regulations and oversight to ensure that technology is used responsibly and does not compromise the integrity of the electoral process.
