Recent Seismic Activities in Eastern India: Assam and Bay of Bengal Experience Moderate Earthquakes

An earthquake magnitude of 5.0 hit the Morigaon area of Assam early on February 27, 2025. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) said the earthquake happened at 2:25 a.m. IST at a depth of 16 kilometers, with its location at latitude 26.28°N and longitude 92.24°E. People in Guwahati and nearby places said they felt tremors, which caused a short panic. So far, there haven’t been any clear claims of damage or deaths.

Assam is in Seismic Zone V, which means it is very likely to be affected by earthquakes. The Shillong earthquake (magnitude 8.1) and the Assam-Tibet earthquake in 1950 are two examples of large earthquakes that happened in the area in the past.

5.1-Magnitude Earthquake in the Bay of Bengal Felt in Kolkata

On February 25, 2025, at 6:10 a.m. A 5.1-magnitude earthquake happened in the Bay of Bengal three days ago. The NCS found the hit at 19.52°N, 88.55°E, and 91 kilometers deep, which is about 286 kilometers from Odisha’s Puri. People in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal felt earthquakes. For a short time, this scared them.

This event has not been linked to any harm or loss. Geologists are looking for hidden fault lines under the Bay of Bengal because of this “unusual” deep-sea earthquake.
