

The Union government recently named Dr. V Narayanan the new Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Dr Narayanan has also been named the Secretary of the Department of Space, replacing S Somanath. The appointment will be for a term of two years with effect from January 14, 2025, or until further orders.

ToggleDr V Narayanan is a distinguished scientist who has served nearly four decades in ISRO working in rocket and spacecraft propulsion. He joined ISRO in 1984 and was involved in crucial projects like ASLV, PSLV, and solid propulsion systems.

He has an M. Tech in Cryogenic Engineering from IIT Kharagpur and a Ph. D. in Aerospace Engineering. He’s won many accolades for his expertise in advanced propulsion technologies:
Dr. Narayanan, as ISRO’s new chief, will drive India’s ambitious space programs, including the Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV), Gaganyaan, and possible lunar and interplanetary missions. He is joining ISRO at a moment when the institution has been touching new heights such as ISTRO successfully trialing SpaDex — a home-grown space docking system.
