MS Dhoni has returned to lead the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the rest of the IPL 2025 season. This is a big change for the team. The present captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, had to step down due to a hairline fracture in his elbow.

Gaikwad sustained the injury during CSK’s match against the Rajasthan Royals on March 30, when he was struck on the elbow while batting. Despite the injury, he managed to score 63 runs in that game and participated in subsequent matches against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. However, more tests showed how bad the injury was, so he had to drop out of the game.
Stephen Fleming, the head coach of CSK, said he was disappointed about Gaikwad’s injury and praised the player for trying to play even though it hurt. “We appreciate the efforts that he’s gone to in terms of trying to play, but unfortunately, he’ll be out of this tournament for now,” Fleming said.
With Gaikwad sidelined, 43-year-old Dhoni takes back the leading role, which he has had for most of CSK’s past. Before this, Dhoni was captain of the team from 2008 to 2023 and led them to five IPL wins. His return as captain comes at a very important time for CSK, who are currently ninth in the league after losing four of their first five games this season.

Gaikwad shared his thoughts on the leadership change with a touch of humor, remarking.
“Yes, it’s been a tough season, but we have a young wicketkeeper leading the team now, and hopefully things will turn around,” he said.
He also promised to cheer for the team from the stands, saying,
“I’ll be right there with the squad, supporting them from the dugout.”
