In a brutal attack, Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) militants hijacked a passenger train in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. At least 16 insurgents and 20 security officials were killed in the attack, and 182 others were taken hostage.
The BLA claimed responsibility for the attack, which involved blowing up the railway track and commandeering the train.
Men and women split, military troops were taken hostage, and the survivors described the stress and anxiety as the rebels boarded the train.
Muhammad Bilal, one of the prisoners that was freed, said it was beyond words. “I can’t find the words to describe how we managed to escape. It was terrifying.”
Another freed hostage, Allahditta, said, “I heard an explosion followed by gunfire as rebels boarded the train. People began hiding under the seats in panic. They separated the men from the women. They allowed me and my family to go because I told them I’m a heart patient.”
“We walked for a long time through the mountains to reach the nearest station. I haven’t eaten since I began fasting this morning, but I still can’t bring myself to eat”
“They Checked Our IDs”
One passenger described gunmen sorting through identity cards to confirm who was from outside of the province. He told AFP, “They came and checked IDs and service cards and shot two soldiers in front of me and took the other four to, I don’t know where. They checked IDs, and those who were Punjabis were taken away by the terrorists.”

The Pakistani military launched a rescue mission and managed to safely evacuate 104 passengers.
The BLA did issue a final warning to kill all the hostages in case the military was not able to cease the airstrikes. The situation remains tense as the security forces continue their attempts to track down the militants and guarantee the safety of the remaining hostages.
