The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 has officially begun in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, marking an important spiritual festival once every 12 years. This year’s event is especially memorable because of a rare cosmic alignment of the Sun, Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn that occurs only every 144 years.

The event will last 44 days, from January 13 to February 26, 2025.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is renowned as the world’s largest religious gathering, with millions of followers worldwide. Over 400 million people are anticipated to take a holy bath at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, known as Triveni Sangam. This act is thought to remove sins and provide spiritual benefits.

The Uttar Pradesh administration has extensively prepared to handle the massive influx of visitors. A makeshift metropolis has emerged on 4,000 hectares of open space along the riverbanks, complete with over 150,000 temporary tents, sanitation facilities, and security precautions. To protect visitors, the government has also sent over 700 paramedics and 407 doctors.

Three of the six bathing days in the celebration are spent in the Shahi Snan or royal baths.

Makar Sankranti’s Shahi Snan is scheduled for January 14; Mauni Amavasyaย is scheduled for January 29; and Basant Panchamiย is scheduled for February 3.

Additional bathing dates are set for January 13 (Paush Purnima), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivratri).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the occasion a good day for people who cherish Bharatiya ideals. He emphasised that the Maha Kumbh represents India’s enduring spiritual heritage while simultaneously promoting religion and unity.

The event celebrates a diverse range of traditions, including spiritual speeches, yoga sessions, cultural displays, and devotional music. It is a tremendous fusion of faith, culture, and community that provides a transforming experience for both devotees and visitors.

In addition to its spiritual significance, the Maha Kumbh Mela has a large economic impact. The 2013 event earned an income of Rs 12,000 crore and created 650,000 job possibilities. This year’s event is projected to have a comparable, if not higher, economic impact, with millions of foreign tourists set to attend.
