The Indian government started the Jan Dhan Yojana ten years ago as a major program. It has been very important in changing the way people get access to official banking and making sure that everyone can do so. Let’s look at its effects and importance, especially for women voters, as it comes to a close after 10 years.

Congratulations to the Jan Dhan Yojana for a decade of empowering millions!

Beginning on August 28, 2014, the Jan Dhan Yojana was supposed to provide banking services to those without bank accounts.

Through this scheme, approximately 54 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened, bridging the gap between urban and rural areas. The no-frills, zero-minimum-balance accounts, coupled with the RuPay debit card, have empowered millions of Indians, especially those in the unorganized sector.

“A progressive step was taken on this day 10 years ago for financial inclusion. PM Modi launched this initiative to ensure crores of our people who didn’t benefit from formal coverage of financial services are brought in to benefit. Over 53 crore accounts with over ₹ 2.3 lakh crore in deposits is the result of this people’s movement.” — Nirmala Sitharaman

Women’s Empowerment Political Factor

The power of women has become an important issue in election politics. For example, the BJP knows how important women’s votes are and has used the Jan Dhan Yojana in a smart way to appeal to this group. How to do it:

  • From 53% in 2015-2016 to an incredible 79% in 2019-2021, the number of women with bank or savings accounts has skyrocketed. More financial freedom for women has not only given them more authority but also made them significant political players.
  • State Elections and Women Voters: The BJP depends on women voters in Maharashtra and Haryana, where elections are coming up. The party has stressed the value of financial inclusion ahead of these elections. Putting money directly into women’s bank accounts has worked well, just like it did for the party in Madhya Pradesh before.
  • A Passbook and Debit Card for Ordinary People: Jan Dhan’s accounts have been popular among women from all walks of life due to the fact that they are easy to use and do not need a minimum initial deposit. These days, people who wish to take charge of their financial situation use straightforward tools like passbooks and the highly effective RuPay bank cards.

The BJP hopes to replicate its success in Maharashtra by leveraging Jan Dhan accounts to reach out to women voters. Even though the plan is in its second decade, it continues to have a significant impact on people’s access to money and how politics works.
