10 Killed in New Orleans French Quarter Ramming Attack on New Year’s Day
A horrible attack involving a car hitting people shocked everyone in New Orleans’s busy French Quarter on January 1, 2025. On New Year’s Day, a pickup truck driving at high speed crashed into a crowd of people celebrating. At least 10 people died and many were hurt.
During a later gun battle with police, Shamsud Din Jabbar, the suspect who was driving, was killed.
Authorities found an ISIS flag on the truck and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at the scene, which is why the FBI is looking into the event as possibly being an act of terrorism.
People screamed and ran from the danger as the truck happened to go really fast through the crowd. Some people who witnessed the accident have already said it was crazy and scary. Police and doctors rushed to the scene, helping and ensuring everyone was safe after hearing the news.
Hospitals in the area were put on high watch to deal with the large number of hurt people.
This terrible event is part of a worrisome trend of attacks involving vehicles that have happened around the world over the last 20 years. Extremist ideas have often been behind these attacks, which have been aimed at public places where big groups of people are easy to target.
After the attack in New Orleans, authorities are rethinking how to keep public spaces safe. They are putting more stress on surveillance and making barriers stronger to stop similar attacks from happening again.
It has made a big difference in the people of New Orleans. People are coming together at vigils and memorials all over the city to remember the dead and help those who are hurt. These services are run by the local government and community groups to help people who were touched by the tragedy. They help people in many ways, including healing.
The main goal is still to find out what led to this horrible crime and stop it from happening again. New Orleanians are very strong because they can help each other get through tough times.
